Following a 10 year hiatus and relocation to the sleepy seaside Birdengine releases SOMNAM on Vinyl, Download & Streaming on Eyeless Records. Another change in musical direction for Birdengine, SOMNAM contains themes of grief, sleep and nostalgia and utilises tape loops, vocal sampling, warped distorted synthesis and organic rhythms created using found sound.
Lawry: ‘I often have a dictaphone on me and find myself recording interesting sounds on walks or wherever I find them. Even more so since moving to such a quiet rural seaside setting. SOMNAM samples recordings I've made of wind turbines, ripping paper, tearing wet wood, all sorts of clicks and metal clanging, different types of weather, drawers and doors closing, flapping pigeon wings and bird song. It features zero guitar but is quite synth and sample-heavy and louder than previous work. The title is taken from the word Somnambulist, meaning sleepwalker and the album touches on many themes including sleep, memory, cults, curses, death, grief but also hope.'
